AP ART: Summer Homework-Rubric

Assignment Description: Summer Homework

There are a number of things that you can do over the summer to make your time in AP Studio Art more meaningful. Here is a list of requirements for work to do during the summer. This work will be due during the first full week of school when we return in the fall. Each item listed will count as one section of the fully graded 100 point assignment. The grade you receive will be based on your level of completion and participation in each item. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF SUMMER TO DO THIS!!! The point of the homework is for you to be making art all summer and thinking about art all summer. Please also look at the RESOURCES section of this wiki and familiarize yourself with the College Board site, the Careers in Art, Helpful hints etc. Get to know the wiki. Determine which of the portfolios you will create: Drawing (about markmaking media), 2D Design (about designing 2-dimensional space with any media), 3D design (sculpture).

Assignment Description: Sketchbook

Keep a sketchbook/journal throughout the summer. Each page in it should be dated and numbered. Design the pages to be beautiful!!! Try to draw, paint or collage in it everyday for at least 30 minutes a day or weekly for 3.5 hours. Choose from the following list for subjects and journal activities. This can become your sketchbook for class in the fall. Don’t doodle-SKETCH! Also remember that all artists sketch even photographers, designers and sculptors. You can also journal in this book as well, brainstorming, jotting notes and ideas for art work. See these pinterest boards for inspiration on sketchbooks. Consider using the Visual Journaling techniques many of you learned this past school year in Drawing, Painting classes. Visual Journals are fun and imply more thought and development. Check out the Journal Fodder Junkies website for some great ideas surrounding Visual Journaling.


  • Visit a gallery or show and write about what you saw, include photos or sketches of the 3 pieces that affected you the most
  • Sketch the people who mean the most to you
  • Sketch yourself
  • Sketch the flowers, plants, trees in your yard
  • Zoom in on objects from nature and try to capture the realistic texture of each object
  • Set up a still life of summer-themed objects and sketch
  • Paint with watercolors in your journal
  • Sketch the action of your life, fishing, swimming, waterskiing etc. whatever you do bring your book and sketch
  • Use the alphabet for inspiration and do a page per letter. For example: A is for apples and sketch all the different apples whole, cut in half, seeds only, branches from apple trees etc.
  • Draw the animals in your life
  • Draw your home and the buildings you see around you
  • Go to downtown Milwaukee and draw what you see
  • Create a cartoon strip that illustrates your summer adventures
  • Illustrate the books you read and the songs you listen to this summer
  • Surf the web for art sites and write a review of what you saw, include pictures from the sites along with web addresses.
  • Try to illustrate your emotions
  • Illustrate words in a style that makes the word look like what it is
  • Develop a texture collection using lots of different media
  • Interview someone asking them about art that has influenced them or made an impression in their lives sketch the person while you interview them
  • Work on facial expressions and draw frowns, smiles etc. notice the changes that faces go through. Do this with flesh on and flesh off (bones only)
  • List artists you like and sketch in that style or collage in that style or collage about the artists.

Assignment Description: Online Work and Reading

There will be a variety of things we do online throughout the course of next year. During summer I want you to set up your accounts and start using them. The following are online homework requirements.
  1. Join the class wiki and link your name to your blog and to your flickr account. Due June 3rd. Make sure you visit the wiki throughout the summer as there will be many links and helpful bits of information.
  2. Read the wiki page here called 10 Mistakes HS Artists Make and click on all the links. Blog on your new blog reflecting on what you though of this reading.
  3. Set up your http://www.flickr.com account and post your username and link on your blog and the class wiki. Post images as described in next section to your flickr account. Due by June 3rd
  4. Set up a blog on http://blogger.com both are free. Due June 3rd A blog is a visual and written online journal. You will be using yours to track your development as an artist in AP Art.
  5. Follow all of your classmates blogs and mine!!!
  6. On your blog, post weekly about your development as an artist throughout the summer. The weekly posts should include an image (can be your own, or one from another artist who has inspired you or a place you went that inspired you) Talk about the work you’ve been doing, the places you’ve gone, the photos you’ve shot any museums or galleries or art shows you visit. HOW are you staying creatively inspired?
  7. If you are unsure what to blog about consider answering the following. You will be asked to answer these questions in the fall.

  • Think about your goals for AP.
  • What materials do you wish to work in (media)?
  • What skills do you already have (strengths and weaknesses)
  • What subjects do you hope to develop?
  • What are your top 5 projects that you feel you must do?
  • Do you plan to study art or a related field in college?
  • Why are you taking AP?
  • What do you hope to get out of it?
  • Are you willing to spend your own money for some supplies?

Visit the following websites and become familiar with the information there. On your blog write a brief synopsis (3-5 sentences) of your visit to each. Tell 3 new things you learned from each website and how it will impact your artwork. Post 2 images you found on each site that you liked and explain why you chose what you chose.

3. Visit one art gallery or museum site of your choice-check if they list artist opportunities for shows look at the permanent gallery and the changing exhibits. Post your comments to the blog. See the links here or on the Weebly Website to get started.

4.Scholastic Arts check out the work of your peers. Post your images and comments to the blog about 3 artists you find influential and interesting. Explain why, what, how etc.

Assignment Description: Photos

Photographs To Serve As Inspiration For Your Work Throughout The Year or If you are a photographer this is your actual work!!!
Use a 35mm camera or a digital point and shoot or your phone if high quality. Shoot at least 50 images total with at least 5 in each of the categories listed below. These will help you throughout the year when you’re looking for how to draw something or what color something is. These will become your reference images. Make sure your images are in focus!! UPLOAD the images to www.flickr.com The free flickr accounts give you a terabyte of space!

  • Landscapes: that feature sky, water, trees, rocks and fields
  • Close-ups of nature especially flowers, interesting wood/rocks, shells, people, bugs, animals, fish anything else you can find and zoom in on etc.
  • Texture close-ups where what it is doesn’t matter, but the entire image is the texture (fish scales, sewer lid, tree bark, close-up of an orange peel, raindrops on a lake, dock or pier up close)
  • Portraits: Photograph people and animals that mean something to you, do complete figure portraits of people in action and still portraits of head and shoulders, try to shoot photos in different lighting for dramatic effects
  • Still life of objects you set up or naturally occurring still life (visit Sendik’s and check out the fruit/vegetable stand or the farmer’s market, both great places for still life photos)
  • Cityscapes featuring interesting architecture, textural surfaces, lighting and compositions
  • Miscellaneous stuff you’re interested in (industrial stuff, old machine parts, musical instruments, art supplies, places you visit, food)
  • Try to shoot in a variety of lighting situations, morning light, night time, flash, no flash, dramatic light (one spot light), windows with lots of light pouring in (available light), natural light in the sun, on cloudy days, in the shade.

Assignment Description:WHICH PORTFOLIO?

Read the AP Handouts and requirements attached here. Decide which portfolio you will be completing. It is possible to do 2 in one year, but it requires extreme dedication, self-motivation and drive on your part (not mine!!). Read the Portfolio descriptions and decide which you’d be able to best complete. To complete the portfolio it is important that you start making art right away. Working from observation is considered an especially strong skill to develop. Complete the following in your chosen media (paint, charcoal, pencil, ink, photography, collage, design, 3D etc.). Hopefully these will turn out well and give you something to choose for your portfolio. To complete this work, go to Blick (by MIAD) or Michael’s Arts and Crafts in Brookfield and get your own drawing, painting and mixed media supplies. If you use any photographs always try to use your own or significantly alter them if they aren’t yours.

Your goal is to complete 3-6 finished works (for the portfolio you think you want to do) this summer.

Remember the following are suggestions if you're not sure what to do.

Set up around your city and record what you see. Zoom in on details of your surroundings. Complete 2-3 sketches before beginning. Think about interesting and unusual compositions.

Draw/paint/photograph/collage a seated human figure from head to toe placed in an environment. Show all the details of the figure and the surrounding background. If 3D see if you can do a collaged/assembled portrait using 3 dimensional objects to create the portrait.

Draw/paint/photograph an architectural structure in detail or whole. If 3D try to build an architectural plan for an imagined building, space or environment. See Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava and Frank Lloyd Wright’s work for inspiration.

Do a portrait of a friend or family member in full color. Try to capture their mood and personality.

Do a landscape drawing/painting/photograph outside from observation showing surrounding vegetation.

Do a color composition of an imaginary world (no action figures). Try doing with real objects 3D

Set up an interesting still life in natural light using kitchen utensils and appliances and draw/paint or photograph. Or try other objects like shoes, bathroom supplies (toothbrushes, hair brushes etc)

Do a double human figure drawing within an interior setting showing all the detail of the figures and their surroundings. Do the same assignment, but use collage to represent the figure. IF 3D do a sculpture of the human figure using media of your choice. Work from observation.

Do a close up highly detailed drawing of a bicycle, motorcycle or engine of a car from an unusual angle. For 3 D go to a junk yard, flee market or garage sale and buy a bicycle or some other mechanical object and take it apart and re-assemble into a sculpture of found and discarded objects.

Do a line drawing in ink of a very cluttered area or unusual area of your home or the city. (Inside of a closet, open a drawer, look down the basement steps or up into the attic, inside of the refrigerator) Now do the same assignment but use ripped colored paper to represent the composition and glue/collage the paper to recreate what you see.

Do a detailed color rendering of a house-plant or other plant in the garden, zoom in. IF 3-d see if you can create a “green” sculpture of living things. Photograph it or trying going to a natural place(woods, field) etc and make a living sculpture of what you find there. See Andy Goldsworthy’s work for inspiration.

Draw or paint clear and shiny objects trying to capture the reflective surfaces and the details of what is reflected in them. Create a sculpture of shiny things if doing sculpture

Use only colored shapes and create an interesting composition/design. Do a series of these in different colored papers, recycle as much as possible. Try 3D version of this idea if doing sculpture perhaps a mobile. Look at the work of Alexander Calder.
